Flute lesson

The day of my first flute lesson dawns bright and clear, and the cat takes advantage of the early warmth. The trusty old flute bag is packed and ready...

And here we arrive at the famous Evron School of Music. Lesson? Great: nice to have some independent ears catching the things I don't notice (inhaling through my nose?? Since when???), and also, an introduction into the scene of other musicians in the area, with possibilities of playing together. And.... a schedule of work for the next lesson. Can't be bad.

  1. Isn't that what noses are for, inhaling?? :)

  2. Way to go! There's nothing like taking on a lesson regime to make one practise and so improve. And that's a fabulous looking building. New? I tried googling it but whoever is responsible is far too modest.

  3. Well, nasal passages are indeed for breathing, and they have all sorts of useful things like dust filters and air warmers so that our lungs don't have to deal with it. But when we are out of breath we bypass all that by breathing through the mouth, because we can get more air that way. It's not normally necessary for very long, so our lungs revert back to nice warm clean air quite quickly.

When playing a wind instrument we usually have limited time to get as much air as possible, so the mouth is a much more effective passageway than the nose: we get more air in less time. If you try to get the necessary air via the nose, it tends to end up as a long, loud, sniff. Not what you need. Especially in those quiet, romantic passages. It's even worse if you have hay fever, or a cold. :)

  4. Oh how marvelous to have lessons and the chance to play with others.

I do hope it goes well for you, but as I couldn't carry a note in a box, I'm with the cat laying around in the sun just listening.

    Much love
    Lia xx
