Tubers

I've been busy in the garden these last few days. The last of the Dahlia tubers have been dug up and put into storage to save them from the frosts. And this pheasant has been strutting round the garden recently. He is spared from being shot, at least for the time being, because there is a hunters' amnesty to allow stocks to recover.

  1. Dahlia harvesting is therapeutic, but do you find it really productive? We did it one year and then just raised them from seed in subsequent years.

  2. Hi Tim,
Raising Dahlias from seed is a good way to get lots of flowers, but usually they are all different colours. I intend to raise some from seed next year, probably short ones to give a splash of colour at the front of beds.

I keep tubers in order to propagate plants of the same kind to plant all together.

  4. Make sure you pack them up cosy and warm with newspaper in the shed!
    Nice pheasant, they're beautiful birds.

  5. Beauty is hard work. I can't wait for your photos this spring and summer.

Are you putting out some grain for the pheasants? Hunting with my father is a good memory . . . but by the time I was about ten all the game cleaning fell to me as he figured he had taught me enough in that line. I remember tearfully asking mother if she minded skinned pheasant. I don't remember what a plucked one looked like.
