Hi J, they are a species of Hellebore, which includes the Christmas Rose. Christmas roses flower as you would expect, around Christmas, and are usually a pale shade of green/cream.
The ones that come in different colours usually flower a bit later (like now), and you can get various shades of pink, red and white. This plant I bought mail order, it came in a pack of three, and this is the only one that survived.
They like shade, moisture and peaty soils, and you can grow them in East Anglia.
By a beautiful river valley in North-West France. This blog is about the day-to-day events in running a group gîte in Mayenne. There's a lot of gardening, maintenance, but, I hope, a lot of fun too.
